Cytokine release syndrome (CRS) is an acute systemic inflammatory syndrome that occurs when the immune system responds excessively, often triggered by certain therapies like CAR-T-cell therapy. Symptoms of CRS include fever, nausea, fatigue, and body aches, and it can lead to multiple organ dysfunction. The condition happens when large numbers of immune cells release inflammatory proteins called cytokines, causing more and more inflammation in the body.
