Sobi, together with Save One Life Foundation, has supported a group of people living with haemophilia to climb Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. Taking place in July 2024, this expedition has seen climbers attempt to scale the mountain and inspire others in the haemophilia community to embark on a journey to overcome their own personal challenges and potentially live a fuller life with haemophilia.
Haemophilia is a rare blood disorder that affects the blood’s ability to clot due to a deficiency of substances known as clotting factors.1 This can leave people with haemophilia at risk of bleeding from modest injuries or even spontaneously, in severe cases.1 For Sobi, the Mont Blanc endeavour and the mountain that these climbers aimed to overcome represents the potential for those living with haemophilia to unlock their own personal opportunities and reimagine their life with haemophilia.
Save One Life Foundation’s Executive Director, Chris Bombardier, has led the expedition up Mont Blanc, having been the first person with haemophilia to scale the Seven Summits – the highest mountains on each continent, including Mount Everest.
"Living with haemophilia presents numerous challenges, encompassing both physical and mental barriers. However, with adequate protection and access to care and support, we have the opportunity to redefine our capabilities. At Save One Life, our focus is on raising awareness of access disparities and equipping families with the resources needed to live independent and productive lives. This expedition held special significance for us as climbers managing haemophilia, as we strive to inspire our broader community.” said Chris.
A documentary on the climb is anticipated to be released in late 2024. We hope that by sharing the journey and efforts to scale Mont Blanc we can offer a source of inspiration for those living with haemophilia, encouraging them to pursue their personal goals, big or small – whether it's taking the small steps to get out of the house for a walk around the block or venturing out to dance at a concert with friends. With the ongoing evolution of personalised care, the potential for individuals with haemophilia to redefine what's achievable continues to grow.
