An estimated 75 percent of rare diseases affect children, often having a devastating effect on life expectancy and quality of life. Around 30 percent of children diagnosed with a rare disease will not live to see their fifth birthday. The severe nature of many rare diseases often leads to high levels of distress—not only for patients, but also for their caregivers and families, who shoulder a significant emotional and practical burden throughout the care journey.
