Our environmental footprint

We strive to improve our environmental performance as well as the performance of others within our sphere of influence. By this, we mean the protection of land, water, air, natural resources, and biodiversity.

Our environmental and climate-related impact comprises direct and indirect impacts, through activities caused by the company’s operations, as well as sourced activities, both upstream and downstream.

Our carbon footprint is caused by energy consumption in pharmaceutical manufacturing, business travel, supply chain logistics, and the distribution of medicines. Environmental impacts from manufacturing and laboratories are mainly due to the use of energy, water, and chemicals, waste generated, and discharge of sewage. Limited environmental impact is also caused by the generation of waste during the consumption of medicine, and could also be linked to excretion.

Reducing the environmental footprint

Our direct and indirect emissions (scope 1 and scope 2) are limited and occur from commercial operations in approximately 30 countries, our laboratory, and our car fleet.

The majority of Sobi’s emissions occur within our value chain. These so called scope 3 emissions have been mapped, catagorised, and quantified using a combination of direct data and spend-based calculations. All production of commercial medicines is outsourced to contract manufacturers.

In 2024, Sobi set its first climate targets in alignment with the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) principles. In March 2025, these targets were validated by the SBTi. Under this new framework, Sobi commits to:

  • Reducing CO2 emissions from own operations by 40 per cent in absolute numbers by 2029, compared to 2023 levels.
  • Engaging 65 per cent of supplier partners within the key categories (measured by share of spend in these categories) to set similar climate targets by 2029.

Waste

We are committed to continually improving our data collection on waste to enable ongoing reductions in waste volumes wherever possible. Proactive measures are in place to minimise waste generation. There is an established process for the reuse and recycling of unwanted IT equipment through a certified technology lifecycle management service partner. This initiative is being rolled out across Sobi’s global operations.

Environmental management

Sobi's Environmental Policy outlines the principles, roles, and responsibilities for managing environmental issues across all our operations, including affiliates and subsidiaries, and areas within Sobi’s sphere of influence. It emphasises our commitment to complying with applicable laws and regulations, a proactive approach to protecting land, water, air, climate, natural resources, and biodiversity, and a commitment to risk reduction and transparency.
